Customer Review :
Works well for what it was designed for: an eReader : The Sharper Image Literati 7-in. eReader
This is my fourth and hopefully my final update.
I've gotten comments back that I must work for Sharper Image, which I don't. But I think if you go to the websites in my third comment, you'll find your eReader.
Right now I think the Nook Color is the best value if you want color and are willing to spend around $250. The Literati, which some stores sell for $250 is no where near the capability and value of a Nook Color at that price. If you factor in the future capabilities, the Nook Color is a far better value even at $250. You can run the latest Android system 3.0 on it and also keep it as a full Nook eReader. It'a like having two machines in one. That makes it worth the higher cost.
The Literati, is good for one thing only, an eReader, period. Also, just comparing the Nook Color and the Literati as eReaders, I believe the Nook color wins again, with better screen resolution, web browser, capacitive touch screen, sound, and other built-in features, etc.
It looks like the Literati is fading away, but as an eReader you'll always be able to use it for that purpose.
The Nook color is the direction that eReaders are going with Android 3.0, the next step is a color "ink" system which will work like the "e-ink" systems out there now like Kindle. Without the glare of the sun on the screen these new "color" ink systems will become the standard for both indoor and outdoor reading use.
_________________________________________
This is my third update.
It not really about the Literati directly as I think it's a great deal for the money, but about websites that have good information/software and comparsions so you can make up your own decision.
Amazon doesn't let you put the full addresses here, but this should help you find them if you search the internet for the following:
"mobileread", "calibre-ebook" and "the-ebook-reader" Do your searches and you'll be able learn what's available and forums you can discuss ebooks/ereaders on.
------------------------------------
This is my second update. I shouldn't had been so negative in my first review update. Although it's true that Borders may go bankrupt, Kobo may not since its Canadian. Even if you couldn't get books through Kobo, you still can upload any ePub or PDF books to the unit using software like Calibre and another called Stanza (which I just found out about)or just through Windows itself as it sees both the Literati and SD card in explorer. Even if they stop selling/making them you'll still be able to use it as long as it is functioning. So at the price they're selling them at, get two and keep one for insurance of breakage. You'll be able to use it as long as it's functioning.
_____________________________________________________________________
I'm updating my review, not because any issues with the Literati, but because you should know that Kobo/Borders is going under so you may not be able to get ebooks directly for your Literati.
Either search the internet for stories on Borders going backrupt or if they allow this go here:
[...]
Kindle is probably the long term solution if this happens.
_______________________________________________________________________
I got couple of white Literati eReader from Kohls on sale last week for just about $[...] each with discounts including taxes. They were only two units so I bought both one for my wife and one for me. You could see that one them was either returned/used, while the other was brand new. I would have passed on the used one but I didn't think they would be getting more of them at the selling price of $69.99. It appeared to be a close out of their left over XMAS sales stock. During XMAS there was a lot of activity on eReaders and they always seemed to be more that $[...] depending on the brand.
I didn't know much about eReaders in general or the Literati. Everyone I talked to said get a Kindle but they were in the $150 range and didn't have color so the Literati seemed to be a good deal. I normally research before I buy, but I didn't in this case. After I bought it then I researched them and found in general that most reviewers didn't like them and basically said stay away from Literati eReaders.
I decided give it a try and searched on the internet for "free" ebooks. I found a lot, both in ePub format and in PDF format. I already had a lot of documents in PDF format, so I thought the Literati would work well to read them. While you can read PDF documents, PDF format by nature really isn't a good way to read them on the Literati to take advantage of the eReader capabilities. Now ePub format is what I believe what the Literati and eReaders in general are designed to work well with. They format to fit within the screen size and you can adjust the text size easily. PDF's on the other hand are good for large computer screens but don't format well in the smaller screen sizes. With PDF's, after you get the text to a readable size the document scrolls off the screen and you have to use the pad to move the document to read it. Not really what the eReader was designed for. EPub format documents are the way to go and that's the format that Kobo and other sell their books in.
I loaded up an 8 GB SD card with PDF documents I had, and by doing so I overloaded the Literati. The Literati's memory, I guess keeps a database of the documents and there were too many documents to list for the memory it has. I maxed out the 210 MB (with ver 2.0 of the firmware update) it had available. I couldn't add anymore PDF documents or ebooks. It left me no choice but to reset it to start over again using less PDF documents. However, the Literati, would not reset and clear the system used the built in function. Called the help desk both at Kobo and the equipment manufacturer and they were no help. The Literati was stuck saying it was full of documents that I didn't want and couldn't delete. I even tried deleting the files in the memory attached to a PC and there was an error when I tried to delete them. It wouldn't allow any erasures. I was stuck and Kobo's recommendation was to return the unit and get another one. Since I didn't think there was any more left at Kohls that just meant I would return it and get my money back, but get no reader in return.
I didn't want to do that and I thought that there must be a way to restore the firmware again another way. Sure enough, the
[...]
board had a link to the [...] file and they said that the firmware can be loaded from an SD Card by holding down "Q" while powering on. I tried it and it worked!!
You can download v1.9 of the Literati or Lookbook firmware from - [...], and save the file to an SD card then the firmware can be loaded from an SD Card by holding down "Q" while powering on.
The Literati was now working again only now back to firmware ver 1.9. As soon as I restarted and had WIFI access, it automatically found that there was an update (2.0) and asked if I wanted to update, which I did.
Everything is working again. They knock the Literati, because it doesn't do more, like the Android models like Cruz and Pandigital. While they have come down in price to about $[...], and are more than an eReader. I think the Literati does its function well. It sized to fit comfortably in your hand and works well as an eReader for ePub documents. If you don't need all the other capabilities the other have, which may or may not work well at anyway, and eReading is all you want to do then Literati seems to fit the bill.
The following board:
[...]
helped me and should help others if they screw up their Literati like I did. I got it back to normal and it works fine as an eReader.
I also recommend using the "calibre" software for your ebooks management. You can use the following link to get to it:
[...]
My only real knock so far is the pad to move around is real tiny for your fingers.
I'll be testing it out more now that I have it setup and installed over 150 additional free books, in ePub format, that I got from the internet. (These are not the same 150 books that they offer with the unit which are classics, but are current popular books from Clancy, Paterson, Christy, etc.)
I'll update if the units go south. I guess you get what you pay for.

Customer Review :
Nice, but not without quirks : Archos 605 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player (160 GB)
The Archos 605wifi is, for the most part, a great product. The interface is easy to work around in, and its out of the box capabilities are decent. Moving files to and from the hard drive, while not as easy as say an iPod, is a lot more of an open ended system that doesn't attempt to protect you from yourself in terms of locking the player to a certain computer. What you have here is a portable hard drive that lets you view your pdfs, movies and photos as well as listen to your music. It does each of these tasks efficiently and really begins to prove its worth when you take it on longer trips. Out of the box it also comes with a good file management system that allows you to delete files directly through the system menu, which allows you to make space while you are on the go and don't necessarily have a computer handy. This defiantly proves worthwhile when you access the expanding Content Portal and want to download a movie while you are on the move, but don't have enough hard drive space to support it. When you are around PC's networked wirelessly and have access to them, the 605 also allows you to stream audio and video directly from them, as well as download new files.
Now... to be honest, while those features are all nice, after I was done playing with them I never felt like they justified the price of the player as a package.
This is where the plugins come in. Most people will likely drop the $29.99 for the Opera browser, which is steep, but again is nice to have. The browser is quick and easy to use, and works better then most portable web browsers I have worked with. If you have used an iPhone, it is very comparable to how Safari works on it, which is defiantly a good thing.
The player only truly ever justifies its purchase though, when you connect it to the DVR station, which is bought separately. In any home theater system, this is a godsend of a budget component. The dock outputs to your TV and accepts inputs from many devices (in my case a cable box). What's nice about this is that you can use the combination as a more open ended Apple TV system that allows you to use all the wireless streaming video/audio/picture capabilities of the system, while having it connected to the TV. This saves a lot of hassle, say if you have a divx file you want to watch on your computer and do not want to go through the process of burning and converting it to something your DVD player would accept. With this system, you just connect to the network, navigate to the folder on your computer where the file is, and viola, it streams to your TV!
For those who don't own a DVR or want to make their recordings more mobile, the DVR station when connected to the Archos also accepts schedules of your cable programs from a list that is updated by Archos, and allows you to record from the TV either automatically or manually. You then have a mobile version of your favorite show that can either be moved to your computer, or watched like one would any DVR/Tivo program, with all the pause, forward and rewind features to get rid of those pesky adverts.
The Archos certainly has its faults though. Without the DVR station the battery takes forever (no joke) to fully charge. Furthermore, not all the features have been implemented yet, the content portal is slow to get the new suppliers, the widgets system is nonexistent as of writing this review, and current accessories are virtually barren aside from a helmet camera (that lets you record what you see while on the move), the DVR and some batteries. Even the official cases for the generation 5 line aren't released yet, leaving all current owners limited to using either the only supplier on the market (over priced and generally not a great case) or protecting their Archos with the factory supplied case which is quite possibly one of the most unpractical cases the company could have made. Finally it doesn't have the fun gimicky ease of use an iPod touch would have. It's bulky, thanks to the hard drive, and the buttons on the side (while very useful) don't do anything to help the 605's dire need for a little sex appeal.

Customer Review :
PRSACL6 : Sony PRSACL6 Cover With Reading Light
I purchased my Sony Touch Edition Cover via this website two months ago and have taken it on several trips with me. After some solid road time I can honestly say there is definitely room for a lot of improvement.
The thinly padded black, leatherette PRSACL6 is outfitted with a plastic bracket that snaps into the mounting ports on the top and bottom of my eReader and binds the unit to the cover. It does a good job of holding my E Reader in place but I remain wary of the use of plastic. Its a given that the thin padding is not going to protect my eReader from hard impact.
I found no mention of this in the instructions or via the company's website, but there are four magnets installed on the corners of the cover. Obviously there for secure closing, this may or may not be a problem for any electronic media placed near it.
A sliding power switch with two brightness settings operate the flex neck LED light. Powered by one AAA battery, the flex light does an average job of providing illumination. No matter of the positioning level, there is a small amount of glare. So far I've gotten some great mileage from the original battery.
Besides the magnet issue that I noted earlier, this product still has an unfinished feel about it. Even though it protects the front and back of my E Reader, it still leaves vital ports located on the top and bottom plus the stylus slot exposed. An enclosed cover would have been ideal. In the meantime, I have to designate a dedicated storage area in my briefcase or backpack just for my E Reader.
The Sony PRSACL6 comes with instructions, one AAA battery and a one year limited manufacturer's warranty. Sony's website is usually loaded with user friendly product data. Information on this product is practically nonexistent. On the bright side there is a toll free customer support number posted.
It is without question that this product was rushed to market. Unfortunately, until there is an improved version by either Sony or perhaps an outfit like Case Logic, buyers have to settle for limited or no protection. For the price, I was expecting more.
